Colorful Communication

Help me give my students colorful, long-lasting, and purposeful speech, language, and functional communication materials and activities with this color printer!

My Project

When I first became an SLP, I didn’t have access to a color printer. I would spend hours coloring materials by hand, so my students could have engaging visuals. Eleven years ago, generous donors fulfilled my DonorsChoose project for a color printer, laminator, and Velcro. All of those materials transformed my therapy room and my students’ communication. Fast forward to now, after a year of attempted repairs and replacement parts, my beloved printer has finally stopped working, and I’m once again without the ability to print in color.

A color printer is not a luxury in my speech therapy room; it is an essential communication tool.

My students are incredible! They are curious, sweet, friendly, determined, and eager to connect with the world around them. They communicate through speaking and nonspeaking communication means. Some use expressive output while others use gestures, facial expressions, sounds, pictures, and augmentative/alternative communication devices to share their wants, needs, ideas, and personalities. Many rely on AAC systems, picture-based vocabulary, visual schedules, communication boards, and individualized learning materials.

But the impact of a color printer extends far beyond my AAC users. All of my students benefit from colorful, engaging materials. Color increases attention, supports comprehension, and boosts motivation. When students receive color‑coded worksheets, visual supports, or therapy activities, they stay engaged longer, understand concepts more clearly, and participate more confidently. Visuals for articulation, grammar, social-language, literacy, etc., are all more effective when printed in color. Even items like behavior charts, home‑practice sheets, and communication notes become more meaningful and accessible.

My goal for this project is to give all of my students the tools they need to communicate confidently, stay engaged, and participate fully in their school day. With your support, I can continue providing the high‑quality, individualized materials that help them thrive.
