Colored Pens for Students with Disabilities' Access to Mathematics
My students need multicolored pens in order to demarcate salient features of expressions, equations, graphs, diagrams, and notes. Lending one pen to each student per class is convenient and equitable.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every student at my school is a first-generation Bostonian. Collectively, our students speak over 30 languages and come to our school because we specialize in providing intensive English language instruction in all subject areas. This particular project will benefit students with special needs in the area of mathematics.
Our students and their families are motivated to succeed academically, but many lack financial resources for specialized school supplies.
100% of our students receive free lunch. These particular students benefit from tools and supplies to overcome challenges they face economically and in learning mathematics.
According to research, many students benefit from multicolored notes in mathematics. One use of colored pens is to demarcate operation symbols vs. variables vs. constants or to indicate salient or notable parts of diagrams. Our students would appreciate this resource as the time and cost involved in being responsible to purchase one's own multicolored pens is challenging to many members of the class.
My Project
These colored pens will make note taking, problem solving, and studying one's notes more fun for my students! The classroom set of colored pens also promotes equity because each student will be lent the same type of multicolor pen to use during class. We will use these to take notes, create diagrams, and to show our work clearly in writing.
Research shows that students with mathematical difficulties, dyslexia, and/or dyscalculia benefit from demarcating symbols, variables, and constants in distinct colors and from being able to color code notes about new notations.
Color also helps to identify the salient feature of notes to make them more meaningful when studying.
