This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are students with special needs. They are receiving special education services due to learning disabilities, auditory or visual processing deficits, ADHD, or autism. They are all working below grade level expectations in one or more academic areas. Many are English language learners as well, which can, at times, add a challenge to their academic progress. A majority of the students come from neighborhoods that have high crime rates and low socioeconomic status. Despite their challenges, my students continue to have a positive outlook for a bright future.

My Project

Technology has motivated our students with disabilities across all academic areas but it's significantly so in writing. Our students often show hesitation when it comes to completing writing assignments. However, when they are given access to a computer they become motivated and excited because typing sentences on a keyboard is much more fun than using pencil and paper. Additionally, our students freely transfer their ideas into writing without having to stop and think whether they're making spelling errors since the computer allows for spelling and grammar checks and auto-correct. This reduces their stress level significantly and allows them to demonstrate their true potential.

We need a classroom printer, so our students can proudly display their ideas in writing.

Unfortunately, once the students are finished typing their sentences and paragraphs they have no tangible evidence of their hard work since we currently don't have access to a classroom printer. Please help us send students home with their printed work, so they can share their work with friends and family.
