My Students

I am lucky enough to teach a class that many students enjoy. My class, Art Foundations, is an introduction to many forms of art. Students get to try out various mediums of art.

My students are very diverse.

My class is made up of traditional high school students, students that are English language learners, students with learning disabilities or physical disabilities and refugee students. Many of my students come from low income home situations and do not have access to art supplies outside of school.

I just started my second year of teaching and I am slowly building up my art closet with supplies these kids can use for our class assignments. One thing I have found is that they love color!

My Project

To instill the joy of coloring in my students, I created a classroom mural project.

At the beginning of each semester, I put up a new art mural in my classroom for my students to color.

This semester our mural is all about the community we live in.

Each class period, the students are encouraged to color parts of the mural using markers, paint and colored pencils. With these materials, they can create limitless color to add to our mural.

Over time, they start to see how the colors they use, create an amazing piece of artwork. I also ask them to come in before and after school and during lunch to color if they would like, even bringing their friends to participate. It gives them an escape from the stresses of everyday life. Coloring is therapeutic and adding color to my classroom gives them a space that is inviting, happy and brings joy!

Most of all, I see how much they enjoy working as a team to create the mural. When the mural is finished, it will be hung around the school for others to enjoy as well.

By providing the students with ample materials (such as colored pencils, paint and markers) to color the mural, they really find amazing color combinations and limitless possibilities for their creativity.
