Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students can complete an Associates degree while in high school completely free of charge. While the concept is brilliant, the foundation of effective study skills for collegiate success is missing. I plan to demonstrate best practices daily. "When you know better, you do better." -Maya Angelou

I serve students studying World Literature as well as Debate.

Most of my students are economically disadvantaged, and some are considered at-risk. All of my students are considered minorities. Despite the labels that have been placed upon them, they strive for excellence each day. According to Nelson Mandela, "The greatest weapon you can use to change the world is education." My students embody this pursuit daily in order to change not only their futures but the world. On a consistent basis, I aim to engage, encourage, and inspire my students to be the best versions of themselves. It comes as no surprise to me that they continue to exceed all expectations. Our school has an excellent purpose for creating first-generation college students. My purpose is to ensure that this opportunity is not left idle.

My Project

My students need a separate workspace/activity table where purposeful study groups can take place via small group instruction. The structure of our classroom allows for whole group instruction, reciprocal teaching, small group instruction, and individual practice each day. During the independent practice portion, students will be assigned to a purposeful small group to practice the current days' learning objective. Students will receive study skills tips, and have an opportunity to utilize them immediately within the study group. Ideally, the students will then propel one another to master other challenging material. It is my wish that with purposeful group instruction, students will successfully be able to master not only high school English objectives, but also experience success in their collegiate courses.
