Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from very diverse backgrounds, with many coming from a difficult home life and several socioeconomic challenges. They deal with a wide variety of stressors that range from just pure survival all the way up to achieving personal and academic success and being productive members of their community. 67% of them receive free or reduced lunch and the majority are first-generation college students.
They all have dreams and goals, with many of them unsure of how to attain them.
My students need more exposure to the world beyond high school and guidance navigating through the college application process.
My goal is to create a college-going culture by exposing our students to more opportunities that are available to each and every one of them, with a focus on college access and career readiness.
This project will provide them with the tools needed to fulfill these goals.
My Project
Seeing a college campus will expand my students' knowledge about what continuing their educations can look like. Many of my students are unable to go on college tours with their parents for a variety of reasons. I want to give them the opportunity to see a few schools in order to encourage them to attend college after high school.
Many of my students will be the first generation in their family to attend college.
By exposing them to the college life they will begin to feel more confident with the decision to attend and get a better idea what type of college they would like to apply to. Wearing a t-shirt from the college we visit will help each student to feel connected to that college, and part of the college culture in general. Most students feel like their clothing represents how they feel and who they are, so having a college t-shirt to wear better helps to promote that sense of high achievement and foster the goal to further their education after high school.
We desire to establish a college-going culture in our school and give students new opportunities.
