Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Interaction and inquiry; necessary components to break down the very foreign idea of college for my 8th grade AVID students. Field trips are great to add visuals to the concept of college, but a real investigative experience through college student interviews will solidify the reality of college.
My students are a great hard-working group of AVID students that go from just average to the top of the class.
They endure the push from me, their AVID teacher, to write organized notes, do extra studying, stay organized, study hard, use inquiry, critical thinking skills, and effective collaboration to keep their grades at a C or higher in all classes.
On top of that they must research and present on careers and colleges throughout the year, many of which they have never heard of, since many will be first generation college students and come from low-income families. They are a group of young Latino students that understand the value of hard work, but also love to show their young spirit through fun activities as well in depth discussions about things such as the 3/5s compromise of the constitution. They face many high expectations and work hard to reach them with a smile and maybe some jokes to get there. They also attend one of the largest middle schools in the U.S.
My Project
My AVID students will be able to interview college students through the Internet and during two college field trips in the spring with questions that THEY want answers to. They will do research on a school chosen, then make contact with students through select student groups.
In groups they will create interview questions based on their own curiosities and concerns of college. They will use class IPODs and the digital camera to interview students in person and take pictures of the campus, their home, or other images related to the questions used. For farther schools or schools not visited, they will interview students through email or videoconferencing.
Students will then turn their interview into a podcast or Imovie (using mic headsets) that can be shared throughout the school and online. They will then use their creative art skills to turn their interview into an informational display board to be presented at our annual college fair. They will leave this project informed and inspired.
An interactive, student-led experience with college is so necessary for my students to be completely convinced that college is for them!
The use of the technology and multiple forms of products will give each student a part that they can identify with and even more so will make them experts on the college experience at the school they work with. With these supplies they will be able to share their experiences with others and become mini-ambassadors for those with dreams of college.
