Collaborating in Chemistry with Chromebooks!

My students need Chromebooks to collaborate and research in Chemistry Class. The Chromebooks will help to keep all students up to pace and collaborating as scientists do.

My Students

As a teacher for an inner city school my students are faced with numerous challenges on a daily basis. They come from a variety of backgrounds and are eager to share their culture and skills with others. Many of my students have a primary language other than English so adjusting and learning a new language is often a challenge.

While these students may have low income households they are strong motivated students who are constantly working hard to overcome the obstacles to meet the goals they want to achieve.

Despite the adversities many of the students face, you would never know it by the work they put forth, their positive attitudes and the talents that they share. These students are strong leaders and friends to each other encouraging each other to do their best. Many of them move on from high school and are successful in different paths of life.

My Project

My Chemistry students love collaborating and learning together in Chemistry. Throughout Chemistry there are many opportunities for students to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom. Typically students only have access to the materials we have in the classroom, however with chromebooks students can do research beyond the classroom and bring their culture into the classroom. Students can make connections to their culture and explain how chemistry is relatable to events directly impacting their life and future environmental issues. They can see and show experiences from their culture to others, making worldwide connections. Students can read current articles, watch videos to enhance their learning experience, draw conclusions and more to help discover solutions to real life problems.

Students can see chemistry come to life and act as real scientists as they are investigating, collaborating and solving problems.

Chromebooks will allow the advanced students to keep learning and pushing their goals to new limits. While some students continue to advance at their own pace, others can use the laptops to get the basic knowledge. They can watch videos of labs they missed in class, watch class lectures again to revisit a topic or more! The chromebooks will help all students no matter their culture, language or how much academic knowledge they currently possess.

The chromebooks will also enable students to input their lab data, allowing everyone in their group access to it at anytime. Data will no longer be lost and worries will be gone about lab partners being absent. I can also log on at anytime to check their progress or leave feedback on what the next steps should be!

The possibilities of using chromebooks in our class really creates endless possibilities allowing the students to work and learn to their full potential.
