Many of our students are direct descendants of Appalachian settlers in the area and dream of being the first in their family to graduate from college. Over half of our students come from low-income, hard-working families who want to see their children succeed and have the opportunities that they never had. After being a part of this school for almost 12 years and a lifelong member of this community, I can attest that our students are bright, creative and talented. They desire to learn and are thankful for the efforts of the adults in their lives who believe in them and know that they have special gifts that will make the world a better place.
My Project
Research in the area of future careers for children puts coding as one of the top jobs of the 21st Century. It is crucial that students have exposure to coding which can lead to possible career opportunities. For our Title I School, the impact of this is great.
Learning to code offers many benefits for young students.
It teaches them another language, fosters creativity, teaches math skills, and helps them become confident problem solvers. These mouse robots can be used individually or collaboratively. In my classroom, I have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) station where students can practice these 21st Century Skills. The mouse robots will be an addition to this station. There are many coding activity options that these mice will provide. One example is that students can code their own mouse robot dance by using the directional arrows on the mice. They have a planning sheet to put their directional arrows on for the dance and then they code their mouse to perform an original dance. This is a creative, problem-solving activity that shows them how much fun beginning coding can be!
Coding is a basic literacy in the digital age. These robots will be a great addition to our classroom as we strive to prepare students for future success.
