My Students

I teach English in a large urban middle school near a military base. Our entire school population receives free breakfast and lunch. The majority of my students are Black and Brown girls and boys, but I also teach a large population of ESL students. Each year, I have pupils from countries such as Vietnam, the Philippines, China, Afghanistan, Syria, Egypt, Honduras, and Mexico. We are truly a small global village.

For the majority of my kids, life is a daily struggle, both in and out of school.

Many are poor and live in homes lacking the basic necessities. Some are being raised by someone other than a parent. Numerous students have been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and some have lost family members to the illness. Others deal with issues such as gang violence, food insecurity, and substandard living conditions. Merely coming to school on time every day, ready to learn, is a victory.

My babies are funny, sweet, and complicated, but they are also amazing, talented, and inspiring. I take my duty to them seriously and will go to great lengths to make sure they have everything they need.

My Project

This is the time of year when classrooms begin to run out of many of their essential supplies. Unfortunately, this is also the time when parents are least likely to be able to help. Most of the items we use on a day-to-day basis, such as Kleenex, index cards, pencils, and pens, are simply not provided by the school. Others such as sanitizer, masks, and Lysol are being used so quickly that we simply can't keep up with the demand.

The reality of public schools in 2022 is that teachers are expected to provide everything their students need, regardless of their financial ability to do so.

While this may not be a problem for some, for most it places an unreasonable burden on their shoulders that they simply cannot carry. When you teach in a school where 2/3 of your students are socioeconomically challenged, many of the parents are simply unable to contribute.

We depend on the kindness and generosity of donors and grants to help us provide the essentials to our kids. Please consider making a contribution to these students and help me close the gap!
