My Students

Click! A picture is taken of a young scientist. Pifzzzt- the picture is printed mere minutes later. Slap! The picture is glued into her lab journal. Scribble... the observations are written. Ah Haaa! A student makes a connection. These are the sounds of students seeing them selves as young scientists.

We are a K-8 extended year, Title I school serving an incredibly diverse student population from across the county.

Many of my 7th and 8th grade middle school science students have a difficult time seeing themselves as budding scientists. This is especially true since we are in a retrofitted kindergarten room with a sink at knee height. We do not even have phones in the classrooms!

My Project

I have my students work extensively on their lab journals and we do not always have time to do reflective writing in class. Reflective writing is one of the best ways to analyze your own thinking, take personal ownership of learning and cement what you have learned into long term memory. Having a picture of themselves performing an experiment or of the stages of the experiment serves as a powerful spring board for writing and reflection. This powerful photograph can be used to finish writing at home and show off to parents and siblings. The more often a student recounts an activity they more likely they are to remember it. Middle school students are fond of posing for the camera and showing off their skills. Having a picture of themselves as scientists will help them increase their self esteem and science confidence.

Pictures will be used by all the 8th and 7th grade students. Most students will even be able to use the printer and the pictures for two years (not to mention the lifetime of memories and positive impact that this project will create). Thank you for your consideration!
