Help me give my students more efficient access to library books. My youngest readers are often overwhelmed, and I would like to make choosing books easier by offering front-facing shelf organization while maintaining alphabetical order.

My Project

The average kindergarten student has changed considerably and the shelving system in my space has not. Pre and emerging readers are not choosing books based on titles- they choose a book by its cover. As an experiment, I gave my youngest students access to bins with a wide variety of books where they were able to browse based on cover without physically pulling the book off the shelf. Not only did they choose a wider variety of books, but they were also able to choose books faster and maintain order as well.

The bins and labels for this project will allow me to make my entire easy reader section more engaging for all students.

In my small sample size, books that had not been checked out in years were. Students were introduced to a wider variety of authors and genres. It's a small change that makes a big difference and creates more authentic interaction with books at a critical age.
