My Project

My elementary library serves students from prekindergarten through fifth grade with a wide range of reading levels, interests, language backgrounds, and learning needs. My students are curious and excited to discover real people whose lives connect to sports, history, science, the arts, leadership, exploration, and many other topics. They enjoy browsing independently, but our current biography arrangement can make it difficult for younger students and developing readers to find books that interest them.

These 30 clear plastic storage bins will transform our biography collection into an organized, accessible browsing area that students can use independently.

The biographies will be grouped into inviting themes such as athletes, explorers, presidents, scientists, musicians, women in history, and civil rights leaders. Because the bins are clear, students can use book covers, photographs, and illustrations to guide their choices instead of relying only on small spine labels or knowing a person’s last name.

My goal is to reduce barriers to book selection and help every student feel confident navigating the library. The bins will support emergent readers and multilingual learners, encourage students to explore unfamiliar people and topics, and make it easier to return books to the correct section. These durable bins will remain in the library and be used every day across grade levels, helping students build independence, organization skills, curiosity, and positive library habits.
