My Students

I teach English language arts and the humanities in the Appalachian area of eastern Kentucky. Median household incomes are low, the poverty rate is just under 40%, and all students in our school receive free lunches. My students come from single-parent households or live with elderly grandparents, and school may be the brightest light in their lives.

Although their opportunities are limited by poverty and our rural location, my students work hard and are among the most capable and talented students anywhere.

I am privileged to work and learn with them.

My Project

Personal hygiene is important to the health and wellness of my students, but not all my students have the resources to purchase common items like antiperspirant, shampoo, and soap. This project will provide these common hygiene items for 50 of my students. It will also provide a new pillow for some of them, which will help them get a good night's sleep.

Appearance, self-esteem, and confidence are important to my students' success, and this hygiene project will provide them with the basic items they need for good personal care and a good night's sleep.

Their lives at home, at school, and on the job will be better if they are clean, fresh, and well-rested.
