Parents and coaches helped, and soon the whole team was prancing around the basketball court, dribbling and running faster than before–no more slipping and sliding. The children were very happy with their shoes and with how it made them look more like a team, and it was amazing the difference in looks having matching shoes made. For parents and coaches, the best thing was the safety of the little ones. I'm happy knowing the children are safer on the court and that they'll have shoes to wear not just during games and practices, but at home also. We just left the elementary school, and while we are tired, we are so happy, but not as happy as the elementary students we just served. They literally jumped up and down and gave hugs all around as our program wrapped up. There were so many highlights, it is hard to know where to begin and which to share.\r\n\r\nIt started sometime in November at the high school, with my students sorting items for each group of students, creating individual bags of crafts, and planning games. Yesterday cookies were baked, icing made, and my car loaded up. Today, it was off to the elementary school for a day of crafts, games, cookie decorating, and so much more.\r\n\r\nIn the kindergarten room, we started with hello's all around, followed by our first craft, making a snowman out of air-dry clay. I've never seen such a motley group of snowmen–some were short, some were tall. Some were skinny, some were fat. Some had heads bigger than their bodies, and some appeared to be melting. At least one looked just like a penguin. Students named their snowmen (Frosty was popular), then we placed them on a shelf to dry overnight, and it was on to the next activity, Christmas Bingo. Just as our first round was getting started, we had some unexpected excitement: The water line in the attached bathroom burst, and water began spraying. Within minutes, water was pouring out the bathroom door and under the desks, with excited children jumping onto their chairs to keep their feet out of the water. By the time the water was turned off and the floors dried, the bingo cards were scattered, so we started anew. Students really enjoyed yelling \"BINGO!\" with great enthusiasm, and even more, digging into the prize box. We played until every child won at least once. More activities followed, with cookie decorating being a fan favorite. \r\n\r\nIn first grade, the routine was similar, although we started with making a beaded snowman ornament, then BINGO and other games, making more air-dry snowmen, and cookie decorating. This group took great pride in their crafts, showing more attention to detail and precision. One student finished up quickly and became a great helper to students who were struggling: some had a hard time threading the string through their beads, but they persevered. They showed the same determination and attention in creating their cookies, taking time to place their candy sprinkles just so. What took quiet a while to decorate was mostly gobbled up in a minute! \r\n\r\nEach group received many goodies, thanks to you. All of them received a drawstring backpack, and they filled it with balls of slime, fidget spinner robots, slap and stretch bracelets, pull-back cars, Christmas tattoos, punch balloons, and so much more. Most ate their cookies right away, but a few took them home. By the end of the day, we were tired, they were tired, but all were happy. We packed up and left amid many sticky hugs and a chorus of \"Thank you, Merry Christmas!\" \r\n\r\nYou, my Donors Choose friends, made this possible, and I thank you so very much. You've given so generously, made so much possible. Greatest of all is the joy had by all, and that, my friends, is priceless. The standing desk benefits students who struggle with prolonged sitting, allowing them to move and stay focused. The beanbag offers a cozy retreat for those needing personal space, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety. Additionally, when several of my requested items were no longer available, I was able to get replacement beans for our original beanbag. \r\n\r\nMoreover, the barstools, paired with supportive pillows, provide an alternative seating option for students who find traditional chairs uncomfortable. With the resources provided through this DonorsChoose project, students were empowered to be better citizens of our community by providing food support to dozens of local families. \r\n\r\nOnce we received our materials, students were elated to construct our new raised garden beds. Over twenty-five students volunteered to help build our new equipment for the community garden. Students discussed their excitement to be a part of the project and the prospect of helping local families in our community. Throughout the process, more and more students began to help with our program. We collaborated with several programs within the school and community to provide additional support, all thanks to the initial funding of our raised garden beds. \r\n\r\nFresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables were, and still are, available to all community members. For several months we have worked to plant, transplant, cultivate, and harvest the plants made possible by your donation to restock our classroom and community garden. As soon as supplies arrived, my students went to work planting seeds in peat pots and aero-garden, and as soon as weather permitted, plants were transplanted or seeds direct sown into our main community garden near the school and in raised beds scattered throughout the community. \r\n\r\nThe flower seeds, especially, were plentiful, and students made small packets of seeds to take home and share with family members and friends. In addition to the seeds you purchased, we had some we saved from tomatoes, peppers, and herbs last year; and students and teachers contributed others. As a result, we've had a great harvest and spread great beauty throughout Wolfe County. I'm sending some pictures, there's many more on our community garden Facebook page. \r\n\r\nAs always, I was amazed and excited by the enthusiasm of students as they learned to plant and tend and harvest. Even after school ended, I received email and Facebook messages and pictures from students. One young man was so excited because he had learned about propagating basil from cuttings, and he had successfully done so. One young lady, Amy, shared this with me, \"I have planted the flowers I grew in class. I didn't get pictures of two of them because I gave them to the neighbor across the street and forgot to get pictures of them. The ones I planted might not be in the best place but they will get lots of sun and water. The sunflower plants, sadly, didn't make it. I'm not sure if it was because of wind knocking the stake down or an animal but it did last for at least 4 days, maybe longer. The other plants are still going strong though. I have parsley and basil to eat and the flowers.\"\r\n\r\nAmy and Gabe's experience is typical of most students who worked in our classroom and community garden, experiences filled with both excitement and learning that will last beyond our classroom. Many of them have helped with the community garden for multiple years now, and several have taken their learning home to grow small gardens or pots of their own. Connie (our Youth Service director) and I gave out some bedding sets (and towel sets from the companion project \"It's a Wash\") when they first arrived, but we kept those intended for most of the seniors until the last week of school. Graduating seniors were so excited as they selected the bedding they wanted to take away with them to college or independent living. \r\n\r\nAs we prepared for their selections, my 9th graders helped me unpack bedding sets and towels, matching colors of towels to coordinate with the bedding as best we could. We put baskets for girls on one side of my room, baskets for boys on the other. Since we didn't have enough baskets to hold all the bedding sets and towels, we put some in boxes and some just sat on desks for students to carry out. We decided to keep the sets in the \"shrink wrap\" bundles they came in; they don't look as pretty this way, but they were easier for students to transport and will keep them clean until use.\r\n\r\nWe called students in during my planning period and over lunch, and most of the boys were more reserved this year, shy about photographs and selecting a basket quickly. All of them were very happy to get bedding and towels, but they were not picky about colors. As one boy said, \"The color don't matter, Mrs. Creech, just so long as it won't show dirt!\" \r\n\r\nWith it being final exam week and my retirement year, I was very busy, and so I didn't document or mentally make note of what students said as I usually do. I do remember a group of students talking about how worried they were about getting the things they'd need for their dorms and how great it was not to have to worry, now. One young man, who was out sick on the day we called him in, messaged his brother to pick his up for him. He was so worried that we would give it to someone else. \r\n\r\nWords can't say how much this project means to students. Many of them received new bedding for the first time ever, and for each and every one of them, it made a tremendous difference. Because of you, my seniors now have the bedding they need for life away from home, and other students are enjoying theirs at home each night. My students' lives are better because of you, and their hearts are happy knowing that others care about them and are willing to help them toward success.
