Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 100% Special Education students. They all have Individual Education Plans for Social / Emotional reasons. Most of them have experienced severe trauma in their lives which has caused them to have both learning and behavior challenges. Many of them are living in group homes, foster care, or with a parent who is having difficulties. They are in middle school, so in addition to the challenges they face in their personal lives, they are also struggling with the difficulties of beginning adolescence and the middle grades.
Despite all of the difficulties in their lives, my students have very big hearts.
They are able to demonstrate gratitude and appreciate those who take the time to make them feel special. Some of them are very strong readers, and some are just learning how to read. Some of them have the skills to overcome their life situations, and some of them are learning these skills every day. They all want to feel important and be loved. We try to make them feel this way while also providing an education so they can be successful in this world.
My Project
Help me give my students clean uniform clothes with a clothing dryer (our first project was a washing machine). Many students’ homes and foster homes change constantly. A dryer will help them have clean and dry clothing to learn in. They want to be clean, and they need to wear uniforms in class. A dryer will support their ability to wear clean, comfortable clothing and focus on learning. They will not have to worry about their basic needs, and they can focus on the lessons in front of them.
A dryer for our school will help students to wear their uniform and feel good about themselves while they learn.
Many of our students live in group homes, foster homes, or in apartments with their families that have limited resources. Many students live in neighborhoods where it is not always safe to use the laundromat. They care a great deal about how they smell and look, especially in front of their peers.
