My students need proper clay modeling tools, rolling pins, and glaze brushes so that they can have a positive experience creating 3-d art.

My Students

We focus a lot on vocabulary, tests, and learn the facts in school, yet sometimes kids just need to stick their hands in the mud to really get the point. Through clay I teach my students about our ancient ancestors, the environment, the quality of sticking with a problem, and we have a lot of FUN!

My students are city kids attending a large elementary.

There are almost 700 students in my school and it is growing everyday! We have a moderate poverty level, approaching 50% and I think many of our students are doing without basic needs. They are in grades kindergarten through fifth grade and they love hands on learning! To some, art is their reason for coming to school, they wait for it all week and the smile on their face when they are in line outside of my door would melt your heart!

My Project

We are one of the few districts in the state that offer art to every elementary student and they really can't get enough. They love learning how art was made by ancient man, how artists are motivated and inspired to create art and creating their own art in response to all that they learn. They are very proud of their creative ideas and their artistic creations.

Pottery is the one project we do that parents repeatedly tell me that they keep and look forward to every year. You should see my students' eyes get big when I show them pottery from thousands of years ago and tell them that their pottery will still be around in thousands of years. When they sign their name on the bottom they imagine an archaeologist digging up their pottery and imagining its purpose.
