Clay Creations: Slabs and Color

My students need a slab roller to efficiently produce flat, even clay for pots and sculptures, and engobes for adding color and pattern without firing twice.

My Students

If you were lucky enough to have an art teacher or a creative classroom teacher in elementary school, you remember the first time that you squished your fingers into clay. I want to give my students as much time as possible to create with clay.

I work in a high poverty school.

Classroom work is quite scripted because we are trying hard to improve test scores, and my students really need the opportunity to be creative and active in the art room. I make an effort to to provide as much time as possible to creating art and to understanding other cultures through art. Because of the limited experiences my students have with the wider world, art provides a window to look at all the possibilities for their futures.

My Project

With the slab roller, students will be able to devote more time to quality finishes in their pots and sculptures rather than in rolling out the clay. They will still have the experience of forming smaller pieces by hand, but they will not have to waste valuable class time in struggling to get the flat clay pieces an even consistency. The engobes will allow them to add color and design to their creations before they are fired for the first time. This saves energy costs and it produces much better finishes for young students.

I cannot run a quality art program without you.

Our school has NO budget for supplies this year. The community is donating some money, but not enough to cover quality art materials. Art truly helps students imagine a better future for themselves. It allows them to develop confidence and persistence is developing their skills. And, of course, it offers a sense of joy.
