Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten through 2nd grade students are students with special needs. They are receiving special education services due to auditory or visual processing deficits, ADHD, or Autism. They are all working below grade level expectations in all academic areas. Many are English language learners as well which can, at times, add a challenge to their academic progress. A majority of the students come from neighborhoods that have high crime rates and low socioeconomic statuses. Despite their challenges my students continue to have a positive outlook for a bright future.
My Project
Most of our K-2nd grade students with special needs require productive movement throughout the school day to be fully engaged and focused. With the classroom rug we would be able to expand our learning environment to the floor and create a comfortable place that is conducive to learning. We would be able to offer the students a break from sitting on (often uncomfortable) chairs and working at their desks. The students could stretch out as they use manipulatives to solve math word problems. Or they can sit in a circle while playing a game of "Around the World" to build letter-sound or sight word recognition to improve their foundational reading skills. The rug would provide a space for the students to participate in so many engaging learning activities that tables, desks, and chairs just cannot offer. The possibilities are endless!
