I work in the nation's 3rd largest, urban public school system. My students (Ss) come from all over the city to attend school with 50% + qualifying for the free lunch program designed for low income families. Several take public transportation to school (buses/trains) , rain-shine-sleet-snow, sometimes combining 2 or more public transit methods lasting 2 + hours round trip. Our Ss are culturally diverse & multilingual. 100 + senior Ss, each year qualify to take the State Seal of Bi-literacy test our school/district supports & 69 achieved the Seal this year in: Russian, Polish, Mandarin, Arabic, French & Spanish. To meet the demands of today's learners, I work with administration & support staff to ensure our learning environment is as conducive to different learner styles (IEPs/504s) as possible; but public school funds are limited. We have parents/community partners who are supportive as well but requests for non-traditional classroom set ups are low priorities with budgets that are continually being cut, making staffing a priority & often leaving out individual student needs, like kinesthetic seating or alternate classroom set ups which make learning environments flexible for group work or non traditional teaching methods.
My Project
Classroom tables, bookshelves, stability balls and chairs from Amazon will help me redesign my classroom with alternative student work stations! Unfortunately traditional classroom seating doesn't create a flexible/comfortable learning environment for all students. It's confining, uncomfortable and often painful to sit at a traditional student desk if you are tall or not "average' size. Do you sit at a student desk when working from home? No of course you don't. Imagine sitting at one for 7 or more hours a day at school. One size DOES NOT fit all. Non traditional, kinesthetic classroom seating creates a positive learning environment and promotes collaboration inside the classroom. It's time innovative seating and teaching took priority in our schools to accommodate and stimulate all learning styles. Flexible seating (horseshoe shaped reading tables, stability ball seating, stools used for sit or stand options, 6' & 8' folding tables, comfortable camping chairs with lap-desks for individual focus, accessible bookshelves that store student's resources and serve for a stand or sit workstation as well) and refigured work stations promote collaboration, address tactile learners and those with attention deficit diagnosis, provide mobility for teacher to interact with students more readily, as well as promote health benefits like core strengthening (stability balls) and standing while working if students choose to do so.
