This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a Special Education Self-Contained classroom for students with special needs in kindergarten through fifth grade. We are located in Bessemer, Alabama and the school is very poverty stricken. Many of the students have suffered extreme trauma in their lives and coming to school is something they look forward to in order to receive adequate love, support, food, and shelter.
My students learn best through visual, sensory and authentic hands on experiences.
The students in my classroom have severe cognitive delays with learning and emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class is at a pre-k to 1st grade reading level and struggles with basic phonics and reading comprehension. Our classrooms textbooks are minimal, our special needs budget is insufficient for the needed materials and reading resources needed.
My Project
This project will allow my students to have new and up to date books to read in our reading nook. This will allow them to choose books they are interested in.
Having new reading options in my classroom will allow me to encourage a lifelong love of reading for my students!
Many of my students' favorite selections are unavailable in the school or public library. In an effort to support my students, I've learned that I must first provide interesting books in our own classroom! My goal is to find at least one interesting book for my students to independently read throughout each school year.
