My students are preparing to have access to opportunities to achieve their dreams. They are refining their critical-thinking skills, increasing their organization and time management capacities, and creating a community with each other. They are smart, beautiful, and important in their discovery of leadership and identity development.
Almost all of my students are fluent in more than one language.
They are leaders in their families and their commitment to education is powerful. Each day, they refine their self-control and deepen their commitment to becoming tomorrow's leaders.
My Project
Currently, we do not have an operating media center. Until staff can be hired and trained, students are using classroom libraries as the main way to access books. While the library is always an option, I want my reluctant readers to have books available to check out and read.
This project includes several student-requested manga titles.
I have found the reading of manga this year to be a way that students are crossing cultural and language differences and discussing with each other about a shared interest. This is exciting, and I want to continue to foster and build this reading and discussion.
In addition to classroom texts, there are fidgets to help support students manage their focus during class. This will be especially helpful as we have transitioned back into in-person learning after being in distance learning for so long. Students are asking for supports to manage their focus.
Finally, there are two texts in the project to benefit my own learning. I strive to practice what I ask of students, and these texts will build my own literacy knowledge and awareness and allow me to fully participate during our choice reading time.
