My students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and come from many different backgrounds. They use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Most students have very low language and academic skills when they first come to me due to lack of access to language in earlier years. This creates a long road ahead of us as we work to minimize those large gaps.
My students attend an urban school where one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives. There are many single income families, families that are homeless and families that are receiving assistance in one form or another.
This year, I have seven students: three second graders, three fourth graders and one in fifth grade. Most of my students' language and communication skills are very low. My challenge is to teach them their language, ASL, and academics at the same time. It is a tough challenge, and my students give me their best effort every day.
My Project
My students are visual learners and need hands-on lessons to help them become financially literate while having fun. By doing a classroom economy where they can earn money for good behavior they will learn how to count change, buy rewards from my prize box and make change!
It is never too early to begin how to earn, save, and spend money wisely.
In our classroom economy the students would be able to use the skills they have learned to purchase some of the reward items that are being requested. The students work hard to earn money to purchase items like Play Doh, mini stuffed animals, mini flashlights, fidgets, and surprise toys. My students get very excited about this project and look forward to it every year.
I have also requested Drive Thru Menu math books to help my students learn about the cost of food, paying and finding out how much change they'd get back. This is an important life skill my students need to learn and am excited about this product!
Please consider supporting my class by contributing what you can. Every bit helps and is greatly appreciated.
