My Students

I teach in a special education program for kindergarten, first, and second graders with emotional behavioral disorders (EBD). My students spend the majority of their day in my classroom. Many of my students have been diagnosed with significant mental health disorders like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, depression, and anxiety.

My students' history of trauma and neglect means they have not had opportunities to explore, develop curiosity, and experience art, music, nature, and language.

Despite that, my students are full of resilience, joy, and wonder, and when they are engaged in learning, they are capable of great academic success.

My Project

My classroom serves students with significant emotional/behavioral disabilities. My students have dealt with many challenges already in their short lives- hunger, homelessness, foster care, trauma and mental health disorders.

The students I work with are already very vulnerable during the best of circumstances, and now COVID-19 means families' living situations become even more precarious and fragile, and puts my students at even greater risk of falling behind academically and socially.

Please help me give them the materials they need to access hands-on, engaging, high quality education materials!

While much of my teaching is now done via iPad and video lessons, my students need hands-on materials to truly master skills. My students love learning through games like Sight Word Go Fish, Math War, phonics games, and Bingo. These games teach academic skills, and more importantly, give kids an opportunity to play, learn and interact positively at home with caregivers. For each child, I provide individual learning packets filled with laminated learning games that meet their unique needs.

With items like the laminating sheets, stapler and print cartridges, I can provide so many individualized learning materials for my students. To keep kids safe at home, I can support parents by creating visuals that help structure kids' days and improve behavior. An iPad stand will help me teach from home more easily (right now, I'm using a cardboard box with a slit cut through the top for my iPad).
