These science materials- including a microscope, magnifying glasses, sand sifter, and rock specimens- will allow my students to engage in cooperative, hands-on learning opportunities outdoors and in the classroom. Students will be able to collect materials from our school grounds and use these natural materials in class. As students explore natural materials, they will also learn about concepts such as plants and trees, habitats, pond life, life cycles, rocks and fossils, incorporated into our everyday learning. My students will use these materials to explore the natural world, ask questions, work together to solve problems and develop critical-thinking skills. Because my students typically come from backgrounds of poverty, trauma or neglect, many of them have never experienced nature, and since many are restricted to a special education classroom, they don't receive the same science instruction as their peers. I want to provide my students with the same opportunities other students have- the opportunity to learn about the world around them, and participate in active, hands-on learning that helps them feel that school is a fun, engaging and joyful place.
