Classics for Language Learners!

My students need books designed for high schoolers but are at a low enough reading level for their comprehension. Many of my students are reading at a 2nd-5th grade reading level.

My Students

My students are all high school language learners focusing on English language skills in my classroom. Many of my students are refugees and recent immigrants adjusting to life and schooling in The United States. Students are motivated to succeed and value the diversity in our school.

I teach 75 students throughout the day from over 20 different home countries.

The mix of different languages and cultures provides a unique learning environment for students to explore cultural identity and the transition into American schools.

Our neighborhood school is devoted to making all students feel welcome. When asked, students agree that the diverse environment is what they value most in our school.

My Project

Inspiring students to read classic literature! These leveled books will give my students the opportunity to read the same text their peers are reading. Often lower leveled books are geared for young learners and are not appropriate for high school students. These readers will help keep my students reading relevant literature while developing language skills needed to be successful in the future.

The Great American Stories Series offers guided reading questions and vocabulary exercises that coordinate with the short stories.

These activities will give students the language support needed to develop reading skills and enhance vocabulary.

The classic literature collection includes guided questions and exposes students to the classics their peers will be reading in regular English Literature courses.
