My project needs 6 xylophones, 10 children's literature books in Spanish and English about music, the symphony, great composers and instruments, 2 teacher resource books with lessons and ideas for integrating classical music into the curriculum, 7 wooden blocks with mallets for percussion and rythm activities, and a complete percussion set with enough instruments for 20 children.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at a Spanish - English Two Way Immersion school in Sonoma, CA. We are community centered and strive to provide a unique, exciting and bilingual education. In our first grade, native English speakers are learning in Spanish along with native Spanish speakers. We also teach English to all students at a specified time during the day. We will explore classical music and related activities in both languages. In our program students are learning a second language, academic content and developing rich cross-cultural friendships.
The rich history of classical music can be brought into the first grade classroom to help children interpret literature, explore math and develop vital imagery skills. I recently completed a teacher training with the San Francisco Symphony where we focused on integrating classical music into other areas of the curriculum. Children can develop an appreciation for classical music as well as the necessary listening skills to interpret the feelings evoked or the narratives that unfold in these compositions. One may think that classical compositions are too advanced for the primary classroom but they can be brought down to the student's developmental level and can actually help students make connections between core subjects.
I plan to integrate Prokofiev's classical composition and story of Peter and the Wolf. We will be developing critical listening and imagery skills while exploring his music. We will also use the story in Language Arts to study story elements, characters, readers theater and more. I plan to integrate additional classical music into physical activities that will help the children use their bodies to understand rhythm and mathematical relations. By exposing children to classical music, I may also be helping nurture the next great virtuoso or conductor. One never knows!
As an educator, it is my job to spark imaginations and help students access opportunities that they may not have otherwise. To make all of this happen, I am requesting musical instruments that the students can experiment with and create rhythmic pieces. I also need quality children's literature in Spanish and English to explore narratives such as Peter and the Wolf and various other stories related to music or vocabulary. I am also requesting teacher resource manuals that have additional lesson plans and ideas for integrating classical music into the curriculum.
Thank you for supporting classical music and creative education!
