Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers, but as a family we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
Do you remember your favorite moment in elementary school when you were able to read the same book as your teacher? Do you remember being able to discuss a book with your classmates, arguing the purpose of the text and not being able to wait until the next week to find out what happens in the coming chapter? These are the experiences I had as a child, and now as a third-grade teacher, I want to pass this tradition on to my students.
Book clubs are an essential part of the school experience that allows students to experience a text as part of a peer group.
I am requesting eight text sets of various high-interest series or classics like Flat Stanley, My Side of the Mountain, and Judy Moody. These texts will be used in class as we read and discuss the novels together in small groups. Students will even be able to take the books home with them while we finish each story. The purpose of these texts is to facilitate a greater appreciation and understanding of great works of literature. These sets will help build fluency, comprehension, and a deep passion for literacy.
