Civil Rights and Liberation through Reading

My students need 35 copies of The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Civil Rights. An issue that we think only adults may think about, but actually an issue that most children face daily. They may not know the proper name for it, but they know what injustice feels like when civil rights are violated.

I am a librarian at a urban school that educates students that have roots all over our wonderful earth.

It is amazing to look down our halls and see many nations represented. I have the pleasure and challenge of getting 1000 of them to make reading a part of their everyday lives. It is my mission to do so. I don't know what my life would be without reading and I want all my student to experience the magic and power of reading also.

My Project

I read The Liberation of Gabriel King last year and was so, so moved by it. It is a story of a fifth grade Caucasian boy whose best friend is an African-American girl. We grow to love the characters and their friendship and the funny situations children seem to find themselves in. It is then that we face the issue of civil rights and racism. The author writes in a way that my fifth graders will be drawn in and mesmerized by the story. This wonderful novel will also spark discussion on these topics and have my students looking deeper into how civil rights and racism are or are not dealt with in today's world.

Please help to fund this project!!!

My fifth grade students will love reading this novel together. They will be able to see themselves in these characters and relate to their every day lives. In reading this book, they will also be faced with the topics of civil rights and racism which will lead us into discussions on how we can deal with these topic individually and as a society. I want my students to see how reading can both be enjoyable and thought provoking at the same time!!!
