Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all newcomers — recently arrived refugees and immigrants — and they have so much curiosity about their new country.
My students are refugees and immigrants from all over the world.
We've welcomed students from 5 continents and nearly 20 countries, speaking 14 languages. Most are fleeing war and endemic violence. New students arrive throughout the year and join our polyglot community. They work together across language barriers and cultural differences. Together, they learn English. Together, they learn about their new home and prepare to enter mainstream classrooms.
Our newcomer program is part of a larger Title I middle school, located in a historically segregated, high-poverty central city neighborhood. The needs are great here, but our students are resilient, and our teachers are caring and dynamic. We're proud of our school and the work we do.
My Project
My students need Chromebooks to supplement the limited devices that we have now and expand their access to current technology.
Most of my newcomer students have little or no experience using computers, and they almost never have internet access at home – so Chromebooks for daily use will make a dramatic difference for them.
With these Chromebooks, my students will come a bit closer to having enough devices to access language learning and ELL-friendly websites every day. They'll also be more able to research, write and edit presentations, use interactive media, and more.
These particular Chromebooks are affordable but reviewed to be sturdy for classroom use and will be helping my students for years to come.
