My Students
The students at our school are mainly indigenous students belonging to one of three local tribes. They are curious about the natural world and want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. There are multiple students who have stated that they want to pursue careers revolving around the care of animals including veterinary science, wildlife, and marine biology. I have other students that want to learn about entomology, botany, and human biology.
My students talk about how they want to experience science hands-on, as a practice.
They want to also problem solve and are aware and active in their community. These students are inspirational in their understanding of the relationship of people to the land they are from.
My Project
Students in our community have a close relationship with local rivers and fish; to bring in salmon through the Classroom Aquarium Education Program, my aquarium will need to have an accompanying chiller. This program will deliver salmon eggs early next year and give students an opportunity to follow the life cycle of salmon in real time!
Students have also expressed an interest in problem-based learning through coding and technology.
I would like to give students an opportunity to design and create solutions in their community through the use of a 3-D printer. One of their first designs would involve designing an alternative to a fish ladder used at some dams.
