Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are approximately 280 students at our school. Due to their economic status, our students don't always have opportunities to broaden their learning or engage in meaningful experiences outside of school. They come from a community where their neighbors, parents, and family members have not had the opportunity to achieve a higher education.
Additionally, we are the only Oral Deaf Education School in the DFW Metroplex.
A percentage of our students have a hearing loss and are working on developing their listening and language skills. What makes many of our classrooms so unique, is that our students with hearing impairments learn alongside their general education peers all day long. All of our students work hard every day to achieve their academic goals and are encouraged to become lifelong learners.
My Project
Within our school garden, we now have a chicken coop that was installed this last school year. Just like the garden, it has been a huge success. Our students even voted on its name, Chicken Casa!
We hatch our own chickens each year and have even been given some from other urban chicken farmers.
We are currently up to 14 chickens. The students take full control of the chicken coop during the school year. Each day our students feed and water the chickens and clean the chicken coop.
As with any project, you discover changes that need to occur to help your project reach its maximum potential. Through the spring rains it was clear that there was some issues with the roof. It was leaking at various spots and way too much water was coming through the roof. Due to this, we need to replace our roof so that the inside of our coop can stay dry. The wood, hardware, and compost will be used to build feeding beds for our chickens. The only access to grass that our chickens have is when we let them out of the coop. Since they can't get out everyday, we want to build boxes, that will be placed inside the coop, with herbs that are beneficial for chickens to graze on, but does not allow them to rip the roots out. Your support will help create a unique and cozy home for our chickens.
