My students need 30 chess sets and a giant game mat for Chess/Checkers, plus 4 books about chess to encourage critical thinking. Teaching math and science requires students to strategically respond to questions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have played chess for several years and I am excited to play chess with students in middle school. They love games and competition. Chess is an awesome way to challenge students to maximize their critical thinking and encourage a more active participation in math and science.
My students are in a high poverty inner city area.
Chess sets are a luxury that their parents would not be able to provide for them. My students are enthusiastic learners and are challenged by hands on activities. Self discipline and structure needs to be encouraged through their active participation in this strategic game.
My Project
The 30 chess sets will enable each student to have their own chess set. They will be able to play at school as well as teach their parents and siblings to play chess with them. Students will read about the history of chess and the moves that will lead to being a great chess player. Students will identify goals and strategies through understanding that success in chess is checkmate!
Checkmate is important as it will strengthen the critical thinking and inquiry skills of my 6th grade math and science students.
I will be able to create a chess club with students who are eager to compete locally, regionally and possibly nationally in chess tournaments. Students will understand the history as well as the movement of each piece setting goals and analyzing moves made by their partners and themselves. Chess will be a memorable experience as lifelong learners.
