Our elementary school is located in a rural part of North Carolina. Our school is a PreK-5th grade public school with a population of 545 students. We have two Title I blended PreK classes and two special education classes. Our current student demographics are 31.68% Caucasian, 30.1% African American, 32.15% Hispanic, and 4.609% multi or Asian. 70.64% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
We have some of the sweetest, most charming students.
They work hard and come to school smiling despite the fact that many live below the poverty line and some are homeless. At our school, we have a program called Capturing Kid's Hearts. This program is teaching the staff how to capture and build relationships with all students. Every morning, we greet our students with a handshake and welcome them to the classrooms. We also have scheduled time each day for students to share good things that are happening.
Teachers buy many of their own supplies because they know our families cannot afford to donate. Our intentional relationship building does not need to be overshadowed by the need for supplies. Help us help our teachers protect their supplies.
My Project
I am requesting these chapter books to revive the fiction section of our collection in our school library. The books are engaging, full of rich text, and are written by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Chapter books open our imagination, are especially powerful tools for delivering important and impactful messages in an accessible format, and spark a joy of learning and a love of reading in all students.
The engaging stories in these books will instantly capture my students' attention. This list includes books written by some of our favorite authors: Ellen Oh, Tae Keller, Christina Soontornvat, Dan Santat, Gene Luen Yang and Erin Entrada Kelly.
