My second grade students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. I believe in them and want them to know that they can do anything they set their minds to do! I am always looking for new and innovative ways to get them reading, thinking, questioning, discussing and taking pride in their learning. Second grade readers are just beginning their independent reading milestone. Therefore, I want to build my classroom library to encourage interest and independence with "Good Fit" book choices for my students.
My Project
I am new to second grade this year and need to update my classroom library with chapter books that will encourage my students to read. The books that I have chosen are all from a series written by well known authors. I plan to share the first book of each series with my students to spark an interest in the characters and hook them into reading chapter books.
These books will help my students build on their reading skills while also building stamina to read for longer periods of time.
The books are for emerging readers who are looking to read more lines of print per page, more complex sentence structure, are less dependent on pictures and repetitive patterns and want to read about familiar topics.
These books have age appropriate themes such as feelings, friendship, loyalty, acceptance, magic and family. I have also included some new read aloud books that I plan to use for shared reading in my second grade classroom to teach about the story elements and build on comprehension skills.
