Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school located in central Las Vegas. The band program at Valley is vast, numbering over 250 members for the 2016-2017 school year. When I began in 2008, the band numbered only 23 students. I have consistently maintained a 90%+ retention rate.
The band has performed for hotel grand openings, events on the Las Vegas Strip, parades, competitions, and community service events throughout the southwest United States.
One of our favorite events to attend is an annual homecoming football game and assembly at Helen J. Stewart School, a special education school serving students with severe disabilities. Another is an annual partnership with the MGM/Mirage Resorts for a Veterans' Day weekend event. VHS band Another is an annual partnership with the MGM/Mirage Resorts for a Veterans' Day weekend event. VHS band students are invited to perform for 150 wounded warriors at the Mirage Hotel and welcome them to Las Vegas to enjoy a weekend in gratitude for their service. Students are able to interact with and thank the veterans, as well as see some of the real sacrifices our soldiers have made for us all. Community service performances like these are the highlight of our program.
My Project
I am requesting instrument reeds, valve oil, and bassoon straps. Our music students perform in many different capacities in our school, from pep rallies and assemblies, to sports games and concerts. The band is requested by the community as well, performing in local parades, hotel grand openings, and community service events for veterans and other causes.
Putting working equipment into the hands of these students will allow us to continue to create beautiful music.
By giving them working reeds and support, the students will be able to continue to perform for venues throughout our community. The reeds will be used in our instruments to perform, and the bassoon straps will allow our bassoonists to hold up and support their instruments without fear of breaking them.
