Challenging the Gifted Reader

My students need 15 copies of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" and 23 copies of "Lyddie".

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Did that book challenge you and make you want to become a better reader? My students are begging for high-interest challenging literature.

My kids attend a high-poverty, rural elementary school in Florida with a 65% free and reduced lunch rate.

These fifth grade students are great readers that are reading at a sixth grade level and higher. The novels that we have at school are great, but are at a low fifth grade level and therefore, are not challenging.

My Project

My fifth grade students love reading novels. The novels we have available, however, aren't challenging enough for their high reading levels. With these high-interest historical fiction novels my students will learn more about history while challenging them to become better readers.

Good high-quality literature is what my students urgently need.

I know that reading novels like Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry and Lyddie will challenge them and create a spark that will have them want to read more historical fiction and even learn more about the time periods in which these novels take place. My hope is to teach my students that the world is much bigger than their own backyard and that, wiith learning, their future is endless.
