Chalkboard to 70 LED!

My students need a LED TV to view all of their digital lessons, something a whiteboard is not capable of.

My Students

Students in my building construction technology class have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience working with a variety of tools. Our school is a Pre-Collegiate STEM Academy; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, therefore, STEM is intertwined in almost everything we do.

Our students come from very diverse backgrounds.

Being an inner city magnet school, we have students who travel from well over an hour away to attend our school. The school requires a rigorous application process, which has a waiting list for highly academic focused students. We also have numerous traditional students who live in the neighborhood surrounding our school. These students benefit from hands-on learning that can assist them in finding a future career path.

My Project

Schools used to have chalkboards made from slate, aka giant slabs of smooth cut rock. Schools then advanced to white boards, overheads, and eventually projectors. In 2018, old, noisy, hot, out of focus projectors are a dinosaur from the past. Having multiple windows in my classroom, students struggle to see lessons with the projector. The projector is mounted on a cart that constantly gets bumped and out of focus.

Not only that, but they have low resolution and projected images are hard if not impossible to read.

Having a 70" LED screen, my students will be able to see all their assignments and important info with clarity and detail no matter how much sun comes through the windows. The TV will be mounted to the wall and will be directed connected to the instructor's central computer. The television will act like the new blackboard of the future. We will be "wiping the slate clean" of old archaic technology.

The next step in this project will entail using an adaptable touchscreen Mimo sensor. This will allow the instructor, myself, to us the TV as a touchscreen and even allow the ability to draw on the screen digitally. This screen will take our students into the future. Upon borrowing a portable 50" TV to do a lesson, it occurred to me how much students were engaged during the lesson. It's probably because it was the first time they could see everything! It's time to invest in our students and provide them with the technology they need to be successful. With the state only providing schools with $0.47 /student, teachers like me are asking for your help to fund this project that will keep students learning for years and years to come!
