Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very special. Several of them have special needs and some have other behavioral challenges due to experiencing some level of trauma. Over 75 percent of our students live in poverty. Many of our students either currently are or have been homeless at some point, which is truly devastating. We also have a high percentage of students who are brand new to the country and don’t speak a word of English.
My grade level changes almost every year, and because of our population, I tend to purchase a lot of our classroom supplies.
Whatever puts a smile on their faces makes me happy! My goal is to make their six hours of school time as special as it can be. They are always grateful for the love and support they get, which is why I am always looking for ways to improve my instruction! I get a lot of hugs here!
My Project
We are in desperate need of chairs for both students and teachers! My students need chairs for our small group instruction which includes both reading and math groups. When I am teaching in small groups, I have a reading table that can hold six students. I conduct a lot of math and reading lessons at this table. We read together, use manipulative and practice writing. As a teacher, there are three distinct times where it is necessary to sit. One of them is at my desk when I need to correct papers or do paperwork (and boy is there a lot of that!) The second is at my small group table. We read together, write together, and I conference with parents there. The third time is at my reading rug. This is where I read aloud to my students and we gather for discussion. Having comfortable chairs to sit on during those times (especially with my scoliosis) would be very helpful!
