Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Community Through Literature

My Project

Visibility is everything. My students are high school freshmen through juniors who spend the first ten minutes of every class reading a novel of their choice.

It is important that teens within the LGBTQ+ community see themselves reflected in the books that they read in the classroom.

Traditional teen literature typically focuses on cisgender, heterosexual characters, but ALL students need stories that let them know that they are not alone in their struggles and that there are others who share in their triumphs.

Through these novels, I also hope to help those students outside of the LGBTQ+ community to gain insight and understanding about the experiences of so many of their fellow students.
