My students need waterproof boots and socks so they can pursue their passion by safely taking water samples as well as helping clean the three polluted rivers in Rome.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our elementary school is a culturally rich school, with a diverse population of 580 students, in Pre-K through sixth grade.

Our Title I school population has 92% of students qualifying for free or reduced-priced lunches and a high concentration of English Learners.

We also serve two foster group homes, for temporary and long-term placement of homeless children.

We do not see these statistics as road blocks. We see them as additions to our rich diversity. Together we will help students to develop to their fullest potential: Creative, problem-solving, compassionate adults.

I specifically teach 3rd grade math and science to two classes of 17 students. I strongly believe in hands-on activities using manipulatives and multiple curriculums in math instruction. I also do a lot of STEAM project based learning to teach and enrich the science content.

My Project

My students are passionate about taking care of the environment around them! This project will allow my students the chance to partake in what they have been building a passion for all year- learning more about water pollution, testing water to find harmful pollutants, and ultimately cleaning our rivers. Rome is unique in the fact that it is home to the intersection of three major rivers- the Coosa, the Etowah, and the Oostanaula; and as a result there is a wonderful community of professionals that are already working towards keeping our rivers clean. My students want to join and learn amongst them, to see if their passion could lead to a related career one day.

With these durable rain boots, my students will be able to finally learn hands on what it means to keep our rivers clean!
