This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I currently serve as a Future Ready Librarian at a bilingual Title I school. We have 750+ students, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, with over 90% coming from low-income backgrounds. One of my professional goals is to further develop our library collection so that my students have access to quality books that also promote diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. It is important to curate a collection that reflects cultural diversity since this has the potential to positively impact how students accept and view themselves, and the world around them.

My students are curious, eager learners who need exposure to a variety of stories to help them build connections across our pluralistic society, and to help them discover the differences and similarities in the dynamic cultures that make up our global communities.

Since the majority of my students are English Language Learners, they especially need access to books in a variety of reading levels that will encourage their love of reading and increase their literacy rates.

My Project

This project will give my students access to high-interest chapter books that also act as mirrors, windows, and doors. Books that act as mirrors allow students to see themselves reflected in characters from similar backgrounds. They will help my scholars discover the differences and similarities that comprise our global communities, so that they can begin to build connections to the world around them.

Teachers will be able to utilize these high-interest books to create engaging, curriculum-based Language Arts lessons. This curated collection of books represents a variety of reading levels so that teachers can scaffold their lessons to best meet the needs of their learners.

Students will be able to read these chapter books in the classroom or at home, encouraging their love of reading that will help them reach their fullest potential.
