My Students

To get better at anything, you must practice daily. Our school is a Title I school. This year our entire budget to purchase technology was eliminated. My students need additional technology in the classroom to practice and enhance their writing skills and prepare for employment in the 21st century.

"Catching Knowledge in a NETbook" is the additional technology I need to implement the writing program that includes daily blogging on our class website and Writer's Workshop.

Through the blogs and Writer's Workshop, students will engage in authentic writing opportunities. It is a challenge for many of my 5th grade students to view writing as a fun activity to participate in rather than simply a chore. I have a class of outstanding 5th graders! They attend a Title I school in an urban setting. Their life experiences and exposure to literature and writing is very limited. They see little modeling of creative writing in the home. School is one of the only opportunities they do have to see writing modeled and participate in using their imaginations to produce creative writing. Each year, all 5th graders in our state must take a creative writing assessment. For the past several years our students have struggled to master their 5th grade writing assessment.

My Project

By using the Netbook I have requested, I would like to allow students to participate in authentic writing by Blogging on our class website and publishing their writing pieces. The Net book will allow students access to the internet, which they may not have in their home, to blog and publish original pieces of writing. Students will also learn technology and word processing skills that will be critical in their adult lives.

Your donations would make a difference in my students' attitudes about writing.

They will begin to see writing as a creative outlet that they will enjoy and look forward to. Of course they will improve their test scores, but more importantly, they will improve their quality of life in the future as they become better writers!
