Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
As usual, a new school year means that we need new equipment. Having an HS and MS softball team was mighty tricky last year and one of the biggest problems came when we had to share equipment. Now I'm not pointing any fingers... but ever since the merger with our sister school on campus gloves went missing, balls disappeared, and pieces from our nets vanished. Who suffered? My middle school girls.
I pretty much need a complete set just for my middle school girls.
Most, if not all, ended the year asking me "Is that it?" They really wanted to keep playing, but that's how the cookie crumbles. Some of my girls were accepted into other high schools, and after an entire season, how could I take away a glove that they earned? So I let them keep it as a graduation gift since they promised me that they'd join their HS team. THANK THE LORD that most of my 8th graders are returning for HS and I got to keep most of my gloves, but the story will repeat if we keep sharing with the HS team.
That said, we need a few more quality gloves for my MS team. Gloves that only THEY will use. I need a batting net and a tee that only my middle schoolers will use. I also need balls that my girls can use all year without worrying that "the HS is running low." This way they can practice hitting all year during lunch and after school. In CHAMPS they lend us face masks for both teams to use... YUCK! Personally, I don't like other peoples sweat on me, and I'm sure middle school girls fee the same, so let us get our own.
