Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second-grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty area in Florida. Ours is a Title I school which means that almost all of the students in the school receive free or reduced-price lunch. I am currently teaching reading, writing, and social studies to two amazing groups of English language learners, some of whom have just arrived from other countries.
Most of our children come from difficult home environments and have unhappy stories to share.
They also lack exposure to many things that we can sometimes take for granted. My students are hard-working and eager to learn. They are also so grateful for new opportunities and excited for fun learning experiences. They have stolen my heart with their enthusiasm for learning.
I believe in using a cross-curricular approach to target different learning styles and to combat boredom and stimulate learning, as well as to make learning fun, exciting, and engaging for all types of learners. At least half of my students have just arrived from different countries and they need help with their English language acquisition. We do anything from singing, dancing, exercise, art, any approach that will solidify our learning while having fun in the process.
My Project
I have several students who were affected by Hurricane Maria and who have fled Puerto Rico indefinitely. Their homes were damaged by flooding and they have lost everything. I want to be able to keep my student's minds off this event and focused on learning and positive moments. We were fortunate enough to receive a class set of Kindles through the generosity of donors from DonorsChoose.org a while back. However, at the moment they do not have cases to protect them and are therefore not being used to their full potential.
My goal is to make my classroom a fun, engaging, and safe place for everyone to learn and grow, in both traditional and digital areas.
The Kindles provide tons of engaging learning opportunities via apps and digital books. My students love them and always want to use them. Unfortunately, they are not protected and can be dropped or damaged easily. Cases will change all that and a specific time each day can be devoted to digital learning for the whole class. My students who have evacuated Puerto Rico will benefit greatly because the Kindles and their apps are self explanatory. They start playing on the apps and start picking up English while having fun. This helps them keep their minds off of the devastation they experienced.
