I am a second grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty area in Florida. It is a Title I school which means that almost all of the students in the school receive free or reduced price lunch. I am currently teaching reading, writing, and social studies to two amazing groups of English language learners, some of whom have just arrived from other countries. Most of these children come from difficult home environments and lack exposure to things that we can sometimes take for granted. My students are hard working and eager to learn. They are also so grateful for new opportunities and excited for fun learning experiences. They have stolen my heart with their enthusiasm for learning. I believe in using technology in addition to a cross-curricular approach to target different learning styles and to combat boredom and stimulate learning, as well as to make learning fun, exciting, and engaging for all types of learners.
