Cars, Sports and Monsters: Books for Boys Struggling to Read

My students need beginning reading level books of high interest for older, struggling readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students are referred to my remedial language arts class because they are performing at least two years below grade level. All but one of my students are second language learners, and issues of language acquisition, special education, poverty, and gangs interfere with their chances of succeeding in school. At fourth grade, many of my students have already achieved the highest level of education in their families. And many of them have few or no reading materials in their home.

These students are still highly motivated to read, but most of the books available at their reading level are intended for first and second grade. The content and illustrations seem babyish to them and highlight their feelings of inferiority to their peers who read at grade level. The problem is especially grave for the boys; not many fifth grade boys want to be seen carrying around a book with cute little animals on the cover. Books that do interest them are too difficult and frustrating for them. Consequently, they do not find reading enjoyable or interesting, they rarely read outside of school, and they fall behind even further.

I found this publisher that sells easy to read chapter books of high interest to older students who are still learning reading basics. The books I have chosen are all about subjects that will interest my students, especially the boys: Adventure, Sports, and Mysteries. Educational research show that the more students read the more quickly they will improve in vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. I know that my students will not be able to put these books down, which will automatically make them better, more experienced readers.

By funding this project, you will give a chance for adolescent boys to understand firsthand why people love to read! As they learn to enjoy books that they are able to make sense of, their abilities and their confidence will soar, just at a time when they need it the most.
