Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Two years ago, our yearbook program came back to life after a five-year break. Students signed up faster than expected, families bought copies before they arrived, and the excitement has grown every year since. These kids are proud of what they make, and the community shows up for it.

Our yearbook students do everything.

They pitch ideas, plan shoots, coordinate with coaches, write captions, design layouts, and meet real print deadlines. Most come in with zero photography experience. By the end of the year, they know how to tell a story with a single image and have a portfolio to prove it.

The one area we are ready to take to the next level is sports coverage. Our students already get good shots at games and athletic events. But with a telephoto lens, good becomes great. Standard lenses limit how close they can get to the action. A dedicated telephoto lets them fill the frame with athletes in motion and produce the kind of sports photography that makes people stop on a page.

This project requests one Canon EF 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens. At 400mm, students shoot from the sideline and capture a receiver making a catch, a goalkeeper diving for a save, or a sprinter crossing the finish line with the athlete filling the frame. Image stabilization keeps shots sharp, and fast autofocus tracks moving subjects. It works with our existing cameras and is built to last through years of student use.

The skills built with this lens — tracking subjects, reading light, timing shots — are the same ones used by real sports photographers. After seeing how much this community wanted this program back, I want to keep giving students the tools to make something they are genuinely proud of. This lens is the next step.
