My Students

My kids are fabulous! There are always new things to teach them, and always new things for me to learn from them. I am a speech therapist working with children ranging from three-years-old to 5th grade. On average I provide speech therapy to 60 children in a school that has over 50% low income status. No day is the same.

In the morning I may be paint-splattered by a three-year-old and learn about hashtags from a fifth grader in the afternoon.

My students face many challenges. They all receive special education services due to a variety of handicapping condition. Their needs include autism, Cerebral Palsy, seizure disorder, intellectual disabilities, specific learning disabilities, emotional disability, and speech language impairment.

No matter what challenges my students face, there is one thing every child wants. They want to be accepted unconditionally for who they are.

My Project

As a Speech/Language Pathologist, each child that I work with has individualized goals that require single copies of activities and homework pages for up to 65 kids each week. As we all know, things happen and a quick change of plans is necessary. The printer in my office allows me to make changes to the lessons I have planned if they aren't working. Sometimes the students are having trouble understanding the concept or I need to change the worksheet to address a new phoneme. What to do? Access to a printer allows me to quickly print out new activities needed during therapy sessions.

Asking for printer ink isn't very exciting but it is a necessity in today's classrooms.

My primary ink expenditure is for Special Education paperwork. If you have ever been involved with special education you know that there are mounds of paperwork that has to be done. With a copier in my office, I am able to print out the IEP paperwork and hand it to the parents. Otherwise, I am running down to the copier in the office while the parents and other personnel are twiddling their thumbs waiting for me to get back to my office. It is such a time saver to have a printer/copier in my office. I am able to spend time focusing on the students rather than standing at the copier in the main office.
