Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in a part of Los Angeles with lots of hard working families who rely on low paying blue collar jobs or service industry jobs to make ends meet. Our school is made up of about 50% English language learners. 92% of our school families meet the federal criteria for living in poverty. Every student at our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Our parents care deeply for their children but don't know how to best help their child achieve to their full potential. Our parents rely on our school to provide their child with all the tools they need to be successful in life.
The students at our school have many gifts and the potential to make a huge impact on the community they live in and in the world around them.
Dedicated and talented teachers guide them on the path to being a lifelong learner and a literate citizen. I am one of many hardworking teachers at our school who have made it a great place of learning. Our doors have only been open for eight years and we are now the top achieving K-8 school in the city where we are located.
My Project
The noise level can rise very quickly in a classroom full of 24 chatty students and one bossy teacher. This makes it practically impossible for my students' voices to be heard when recording their voices or making videos. Help them be heard.
My students have stories to share, problems to be solved, and great imaginations that need to be heard by each other and by their parents.
Lapel microphones with condensers reduce the background noise and allow the listener to hear that one student's voice ring through loud and clear.
Technology is a great way to connect parents to what is happening in our classroom but if they cannot hear their child that connection can quickly be lost. These microphones will allow parents to hear their students reading a grade level text, a story their child has written on their own, a presentation they researched and wrote about it or how they solved a complicated math problem. The students sharing will also build their own listening and speaking skills. Recordings will also give them access to reflect on their own learning and make improvements based on their own self-monitoring. Lapel microphones are such a simple device that can make a radical difference.
